Funny you should mention alpacas. One of my best friends breeds alpacas in Australia. He keeps saying it is going to be big but it hasn't happened yet. But talk about a non-passive investment - it is a lot of hard work.
I think people breed and sell Alpacas to other people who think they'll be the next big thing, but then all they do is breed and sell them to the next sucker who thinks they'll be big.

Why hasn't it exploded yet, and why now? Is alpaca wool some new fad?
I'm curious because I'm a huge, huge fan of Merino wool (but god DAMN is it expensive, and not even durable to boot)
